What is the purpose of the study?

  • Bexar County has identified a gap in qualified African American Business Enterprise.
  • These businesses can participate in Small, Minority and Women Owned Business Enterprise (SMWBE) contract programs in the Alamo region.
  • The county has also recognized the need to identify AABE eligible firms in the Alamo region and increase the number of African American Business Enterprise (AABE) bidders and potential awards for County contractors for goods, commodities, services, construction services, and professional services.
  • The county also wants to stimulate local African American Business Enterprise (AABE) outreach, economic growth, and development.

What industries are being studied?

The study includes an analysis and evaluation of industries identified by the North American Industrial Classifications System included in the areas of :

  • Construction
  • Architecture & Engineering
  • Professional Services
  • Other Services
  • Goods and Supplies

The survey will include items about capacity and business relationships within the private sector and with local governments and public agencies such as cities, counties, special districts, public utilities, school districts, soil and water conservation districts, and other entities.

The survey will be administered to business owners in the San Antonio-New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). A final report on the study will be delivered and made public after a Commissioners Court vote in June of 2016.
